chronically ill, not incapable
At 26, I was diagnosed with Essential Thrombocythemia that progressed to Polycythemia Vera just a year later. PV (part of a group of diseases called myeloproliferative neoplasms, or MPNs) is a rare, chronic blood cancer where the bone marrow produces too many red blood cells. Too many red blood cells can cause the blood to thicken. Thicker blood doesn’t flow normally through arteries and veins.
I'm adamant about sharing my story because the day of my diagnosis, I went home to scour the internet for more information. To my surprise I found nothing in layman's terms, or relatable; especially not from anyone that looked like me–– age or race wise.
I don't want anyone else to look and not find answers, comfort, or a community.
